AI on its own doesn’t ruin the planet or cause pollution, if corporations are ruining the planet to train AI models the issue is corporations not AI

Europe is closer to Iran than America

I think it’s a legit question, when there’s a tragedy involving kids it’s always a big deal, politicians yells about it and media coverage goes on for weeks. Personally i know there is no difference between children but i’m genuinely puzzled about what is the answer according to government and media logic.

It’s more about what is not being said: more than 150 iranians kids recently died in a bombing and it was on the news for only two days, no minutes of silence or football teams wearing a badge for the victims, no politicians condemning what happened and sending wishes to the families involved.

spotify and major music labels should be sued for 13 trillion

Europe is supporting Ukraine in an existential fight for their lives.
European governments are supporting ukraine government in multiple ways including sending them weapons, this has not much to do with european countries boosting their already over the top military budget.
This is far different from wanting to generate a false naked picture of some person.
I would argue that generating a false naked picture of someone is less harmful for humanity than spending the same amount of energy to develop a weapon designed to murder other human beings.

I would argue generating art is less harmful for humanity than crafting weapons designed to kill others and wage war.

Humanity just can’t stop killing each other. It’s an instinct that evolved to be helpful to survival at one point thousands of years ago
Killing other humans is not an instinct at all. Self defense when threatened is an instinct, people get tricked by these in power to feel in danger and to kill others.

People have protested the military industrial complex for decades and centuries.
Here on lemmy i’ve seen more people cheering up at europe’s rearmament than i’ve seen complaining about the military industrial complex power waste.

What’s confusing to me is why the power energy negative is being used only to attack AI

This makes me wonder if some people are using the power usage issue to attack AI in general.

Bombs are carefully manufactured with waste products controlled, and products blowing up today’s enemies coming to kill your kids.
I would argue the war industry probably has less regulations than other businesses. In the US there are as many datacenters as military bases/arms factories.
but the personal life of the person who made it should not be a factor at all.
The data windows collects about you goes in the hands of people involved in a pedo sexual abuse scandal. You should be indeed concerned

Don’t use this shit

So I guess I’m saying: don’t make the thing you love your lifeline to surviving capitalist society, because unless that thing is “making money”, doing it for money or clientelle chokes the joy out of most human endeavors.
This is a really good quote, thanks.
There’s a lot of anti-AI propaganda coming from the same AI corporations and governments trying to push for regulations that will grant them a monopoly on this tech and limit the development and usage for people. Many brought up multiple reasons why they dislike AI, the same arguments could be used for other technologies and services but personally i’ve never seen anyone here on lemmy picking a fight against military data centers or videogames industry for causing pollution.
The most upvoted comments hint at big techs being a problem but seem to fail to acknowledge that issues caused by “AI” are mostly caused by the corporations and evil characters behind these.
