I always get such a kick reading comments from extremely overly confident people who know nothing about a topic that I’m an expert in, it’s really just peak social media entertainment

LLMs are part of AI, so I think you’re maybe confused. You can say anything is just fancy anything, that doesn’t really hold any weight. You are familiar with autocomplete, so you try to contextualize LLMs in your narrow understanding of this tech. That’s fine, but you should actually read up because the whole field is really neat.

lol ok buddy you definitely know more than me
FWIW I think you’re conflating AGI with AI, maybe learn up a little

With openclaw and moltbook recently, the threat of taking many white collar jobs has shaken me to the core. My job may be gone in the next few years, and I do AI research directly…

You hate this narrow use of AI in the commercial space . AI is so much larger and is used in many more amazing things that actually improve humanity than just making funny pictures and chatbots to squeeze more profit out of consumers. I know this because I’ve researched AI for climate for a long time now.

AI is just a tool like anything else. What’s the saying again? "AI doesn’t kill people, capitalism kills people?
I do AI research for climate and other things and it’s absolutely widely used for so many amazing things that objectively improve the world. It’s the gross profit-above-all incentives that have ruined “AI” (in quotes because the general public sees AI as chatbots and funny pictures, when it’s so much more).
Exactly. There are also hundreds of useful applications more than just consumer facing that you may be aware of. For example, I do research for climate models and we’re using diffusion models to make the data assimilation step more accurate, so there’s all kinds of things other than just making funny pictures or songs or whatever.
It was never meant to be used in this way at this scale though. He put out a new method/paradigm and that was that. It was the asshole investor tech bros that destroyed the planet once they learned of it.
Just like anything, almost no tech or thing is inherently bad, but it becomes bad when the ruling class get their greedy grimy little grimy in it.

what in the what…
I’m afraid of buying a new computer now
The scientific journal industrial complex is one of the highest profit margins in the world. It’s consistently at like 30-60% pure profit. Obviously not all journals are the same, some are reasonable, but some are insane. LOOKING AT YOU ELSEVIER

On another account on reddit I asked some political science subreddit “what if we used a type of git tool for bill contributions and history tracking?” It would have to be extremely simplified for such tech illiterate people to navigate it of course, but the consensus seemed to be that lobbyists could still sneak in their own language in massive pushes with opaque commit comments.
I have a full repo that mirrors any actual code I have, just so I can practice the very git operations with dummy files before doing it on a real codebase. It has come in handy many many times already and I highly recommend it.

I know it may seem that way if you’re constantly online these days, but in general most people are just people. Like 80% are mostly good, but human, and may have some minor issues. Probably 10% are Jesus-level good, then 10% are sociopathically evil.
Now, if by society you mean “American capitalism”, then yes that favors assholes who care less about their fellow humans. This flavor of capitalism is inherently selfish and greedy, so those who succeed in it are the most greedy and bad people. Yes people care, but the forces preventing anyone from changing it are the strongest in the history of human civilization with technology too now, that makes it borderline impossible to change the underlying system. Only a major catastrophe caused by capitalism where millions of Americans died would cause the general populace to question the system, but honestly even then who fucking knows.
Conservatives are more afraid of everything, and respond in anger. How the fuck is that “better”?
