When using the noai domain + html instead of just providing the URL to the website a redirect website through Duckduckgo is provided.

Here’s an example:

https://noai.duckduckgo.com/html?q=cloudflare+speedtest has:

https://noai.duckduckgo.com/l/?uddg=https%3A%2F%2Fspeed.cloudflare.com%2F&rut=7308a8bf028168b377d5ba5ac7f2669efd5d25f87445327fa6ba22aa5db85355 as the URL for the first result instead of speed.cloudflare.com.

That URL will change the window location with javascript to the correct website or HTML redirect if javascript is disabled. In the paramaters uddg is the URL to redirect to and rut is an identifier based on the URL it redirects to.

I’m not sure why it only happens with this specific combination of search, can anyone else check if this happens?

Also, I’m not sure if this is the correct community to post to but !duckduckgo@lemmy.world is dead and this is sort of privacy related because this can be used for tracking. Sorry if this is the wrong community for this kind of post.

Can’t help with this exactly but just wanted to point out that DDG has chosen to censor search results. The results they were censoring was, granted, for good reasons. But the issue is that if the founders are making personal choices on what should and shouldn’t be shown in search results, you can’t know what else they may be censoring or what they’ll decide to censor in the future.

On a similar topic, does anyone know a translation service that does not require JavaScript?

Might not be something that you exactly need, but might help you:

      • https://github.com/DavidVentura/offline-translator if you are on Android, it is fully offline, once you download an translation models. Also it provides option to turn on LibreTranslate-compatible server, so other programs that supports this API can call this servee.
      • https://github.com/you-apps/TranslateYou — Multi-service client, can translate from many different service, including ability to provide your own addresses to other (or your own) instances.
      • You can selfhost earlier mentioned libretranslate https://libretranslate.com/, it is relatively easy to do. Translation quality quite good, but it’s model are somewhat really bad with single word translations. If you want to translate mostly single words, then some dictionary solution should be preferred.
      • If you are on Linux, you can check out https://flathub.org/de/apps/net.mkiol.SpeechNote — it’s primary function is to deal with text-to-speech and vise versa, but it also provides translator. Translation models here are based on Mozilla models that you might had used in Firefox.
      • Also Linux app: https://flathub.org/de/apps/dev.ters.LocalTranslate, it also uses Mozilla models under the hood.

Thank you, libertranslante may be an option. I need a translation service to point my kobo to.

The kobo browser as never been updated and does not work with gtranslate any more. DDG has a translation service, but only of you use the JS enabled version.
