There was a short lived candybar called PB Max that I’ve been craving for like the last 20 years. It actually tasted like peanut butter which, despite my love for peanut butter cups, just completely outdid them for peanutty goodness.

the garage. I was 6 or 7, my mom was undergoing a major health situation and the medication wasn’t doing her mental processes any favors. One morning she was running late and so asked me to start her car. I’d never started a car in my life, I had no idea what to do and I couldn’t reach the pedals so I asked my younger sibling to help out. I stayed on the floor and operated the pedals, my sibling was in charge of the key.

mind you, this was a stickshift and it was parked in the driveway, facing the garage door.

I have no idea what we actually did, I only remember the crashes as we went through the garage door and through the back wall. The front of the car now blocking the alley, we yanked the key ran to hide because we had just taken down a fucking building ruined mom’s new car, and thought we were going to be killed. Of course she instantly realized what happened and knew that she was at fault so when she found us we were of course in no trouble; but man, what a ride that was…

I showed them by having a successful and happy life. Nothing else needs to be said.

You make an excellent point, without use it’s mostly just there for nothing… but, specifically I build shit that they complain about. I have my personal photo site up with all my digital photos from the last 25 years catalogued and available from anywhere, I did this because they complained about not having them accessible. Hasn’t been logged into by anyone but me…

But I don’t really blame them, I get it. The easy button is right there.

I feel you. I’ve spent the last couple years building up self hosted replacements for these enshittified services as they flop. But despite all the work I’ve put in, I can’t even get them to log off facebook to look at what I’ve got.

For me, right now. I’m having a blast figuring out how to self host all the enshittified services that I’m closing off access to.

Catch 22 really, I’m enjoying it because I’m learning so much, so fast but probably shouldn’t have to and it’s not feasible for most I realize.

Only shadenfreud I have is that my deleted banter that they will assuredly include, will hopefully increase the stupidity of whatever model gets trained on it. Ugh, what a dystopia we’re building.

This has got to be the start of another bubble popping. It just has to, right? With essentially all online services doing everything they can to wring out every last penny of value without any eye towards the future (other than ai all the things)… something’s gotta give.

But then again, maybe it’s just my eyes being open after living in those spaces for so long. Granted I’ve been out of Facebook for years, been de-amazonning for a couple (it’s really f’ing hard) and I’ve been trying to de-google as well but it’s even harder (stuck with Apple though). But, now that I’m in the fediverse, where we’re talking about all this, maybe that’s why I’m noticing?

so much better. Instead of a human seeing it, your personal info is now a part of the amazon machine. IMHO it’s even more terrifying to know it’s automated than it would be if some kid unboxed it off the assembly line and personally typed your shit in off a piece of paper.

I’m ok with that for how I use Debian, and is its kind of intended purpose. Outdated but stable is fine for a server being that the latter is my main concern. I wouldn’t use it for my daily driver (tried that and wound up back in Windows). IMHO, Debian has no GUI.

honestly, I have experienced the opposite lately. These days, anything I’m looking to do in Linux has already been done and someone has written instructions for it. If it requires digging in to any nitty-gritty, there’s usually decent documentation as well. Windows has so many opaque and propriety processes, and opens so many network connections that I am not entirely sure what the OS is doing most of the time.

I would rather go barefoot in shoes than wear socks twice in a row. Heck, I often change them when I get home from work.

I’ve long said, the first thing I’d do after winning the lottery is never wear the same pair of socks twice because my favorite of life’s little unnoticed pleasures is the feeling of a new pair of socks.

Bingo. I’ve been running refurb 4tb hgst drives for years now, oldest one has 50k power on hours and I’m not sure if that’s how long I’ve run it or if it had a bunch when it came. Either way, I have yet to lose one in years of use while popping several western digital and seagate drives.

I’m moving to 10tb drives (I tend to pick the biggest sub $100 drive option when I need a new standard) since I’m out of drive bays and nearly out of space on the old garbage array. Stick to the 3-2-1 rule and these should be fine.

Apple 2e I got from my next door neighbor at a garage sale. I spent every moment on the thing until I saved up enough to build myself a 486. After that I was the computer kid so people would give me their old stuff, had a 286 and a 386 that put together from a box of discarded office computer parts. Spent hours sorting through and testing individual RAM chips but was able get it working, I still remember typing up school papers on it and the horrible racket the daisy wheel printer made as it printed my assignments on green and white office paper.

It’s the enshittification of the entire country.
