While gemini is a great project, I personally think a better route would be to create a local or server service that converts and saves existing webpages to markdown, and local apps acting as markdown browsers utilizing it.
With that people could write simple browsers, as well as reduce spying and have static content viewable on all form factors.
Everything that’s not static content (like the fediverse) already can have dedicated apps.

We lost Losurdo pretty recently, and he was IMO one of the best of the last few decades.
5m seems about right. Lemmy’s from scratch builds are ~3.5m on a fast machine, and we have ~60k lines of code, and are using some with large libraries with lots of features enabled.
But you really should only ever have to do a from scratch build either at the beginning, or when you deploy. When developing, your IDE should only ever really run check or clippy, which should take seconds at most.
Any negative speech: especially harsh, slanderous or divisive, that provokes equally charged emotional responses.
One other thing I’d like to add: It’s not just that rage-inducing content is out there, that’s always been there. It’s that it gets rewarded by big tech, by making sure that highly responded content, gets pushed to the top.
Capitalist tech companies have an incentive to platform this content because it increases the on-site time, and their own popularity, to the detriment of their users mental health. It also helps them push pro-capitalist narratives that atomize and isolate people who should be united by a shared humanity and class status.
tbh we’re somewhat guilty of this in lemmy also, with the Active sort allowing new comments to bump posts to the top of feeds.
The only real way to fight it, is to keep an eye out for these toxic / combative threads and posters, and remove them if necessary. Since we don’t capitalist incentives to keep people on site or serve ads, it serves no benefit to keep rage-bait posters around.
Its also especially rich considering the US state has access to even disabled nest door cameras, which amazon is happy to give them.
Even someone who is completely sinophobic, would have to concede that the PRC, even if it wanted to, could not send police to your door.
Send cops to your door, imprison you, kill you, etc. The US has many political prisoners, and even jailed a mother for discussion abortion with her teenage daughter over facebook.

Just from experience as an admin reviewing applications, bots are nowhere near replicants. 98% of bots can’t make an application without using obvious phrases like “I’d like to engage in meaningful discussions”.
Registration applications (which are pretty much required on all lemmy servers now) have stopped about 95% of them. Some still get through of course, but the admins of every server are doing hard work to prevent it.
The other 5% are quickly discovered and reported, and they can be banned (and their content removed), at the click of a button.
The LLMs are getting creative with how they answer, and people also are applying with half of the responses LLM based, and half real. But its still not hard to spot them when they give all the same predictable answers.
Its interesting because applications are how the old forum-internet used to keep out bots and trolls, and its still the best method to this day. There’s still work to be done, and it’s a never-ending battle, but I think overall we’re winning and doing better than western surveillance platforms like reddit, youtube, or facebook.

Browsers are bigger than operating systems now. One of the points of gemini is to use a very restricted language and abilities, so that developers can create their own gemini browsers easily.
As it stands now, google exerts enormous control on the web because of how complicated it is to make a browser. Currently mozilla is google’s only competitor in browser engines.
