I remember getting my Texas instruments financial calculator circa 2009 for probably fifty dollars or so.

The professor told us that at the time, production costs for my fifty dollar calculator were roughly a dollar.

On the bright side, I’ll bring that thing in whenever I buy a car and it truly fucks with the whole “what kind of payment are you looking for” routine they do. (Though these days, I’m more likely to bring a laptop with Excel. Same idea, but faster and better visuals)

  • People bring their dogs to work all the time in my office. Fortunately, all of us are dog lovers, so we all enjoy it.

The other trend that doesn’t bother me, but surprises me is that I’d estimate about two thirds of the people in my office vape at their desks.

We also have bean to cup espresso, which is nice. People will go find high end beans and contribute them. It works out nicely.

    We’re highly educated professionals, damnit!

As a long time teacher of ESL back in the day, I’d say that depends heavily on the native language.

    European languages generally do well

    Asian languages generally struggle

Middle Eastern languages, well, things don’t translate well on paper

Conversely, I found the middle Eastern students to have excellent speaking abilities.

The difference in how the mind processes speaking vs writing was truly fascinating to me.

My daughter came home from middle school once.

She plopped down in a chair, let out a sigh, and said, “Math is the only thing in the world that makes sense.”

I’m surprised I still have a tongue after biting down so hard to suppress the laughter.

  • On the trust thing - every once in a while I’ll go to a concert by myself, stand in the back, and enjoy the moment and remember the old times.

More often than not, three or four young ladies will come up over the course of the evening and start giving me their life stories and their relationship struggles and whatnot.

This isn’t a flirting or drunk thing on either end of the equation. In that moment, they just seem to need somebody to listen to them.
