I go to great lengths to not use Amazon but in the US, unless you live in a large urban area Amazon and Walmart have systematically run most smaller, neighborhood retailers out of business already. I used to really love music discovery on Spotify. I now find it’s the same ald songs over and over. It finds what you like and reinforces that rather than gradually expand it.

I’m in the same boat. For years now it’s felt like every daily mix and discovery playlist is 10 songs I recently just listened to on repeat and then 2 songs that aren’t even tangentially related and I’m left questioning why they were being shown to me.

You can Ctrl+select multiple languages. Do you also have Undetermined+English+whatever else is relevant set?

In my experience the federation issues others are referring to don’t report missing comments because they aren’t technically there on anything but the home instance so I’m inclined to believe it’s something different.

Go to your settings and make sure your language preferences include “undetermined” as well as your preferred languages. Lemmy only shows comments that match your preferences.

That’s definitely the case then as most major instances pushed updates around then. Lemmy.World has been particularly bad since it’s still running on the old 0.18.x version of Lemmy.

The bugs have been opened and the devs made aware of the issues. For now just be patient as things get worked on as it is the holiday season.

You’re not shadow banned and I don’t believe that’s a thing. The newer versions of Lemmy 0.19.0/1 have issues with federation to other instances. If you are posting comments to another instance it is likely not being seen by anyone.

Caramelization is a specific chemical change to the sugars in the onions. Brown =/= Caramelized and will affect the flavor significantly so you really shouldn’t cut corners.

If I’m commiting the time to do it I just make sure to make as much as I can fit in my pot.

But true caramelization on onions is still like 45-60 minutes of constant attention. It’s not difficult, but it does require a lot of time and effort. You’re not getting a caramelization in 15 minutes without a pressure cooker and even then they taste like nothing so what’s the point?

I know you clarified that they can just be to translucent, but it’s hilarious to me that the first step to a lazy meal is to spend 45 minutes caramelizing onions.

On top of the other comments, I’d also like to point out that it’s a little unfair to blame a brand new fediverse user for not understanding how it works.

I know I certainly didn’t understand how it worked with my first account, but you learn over time by using and interacting. You need to make an account first though to get to that point. Lemmy.world is a safe option for a new user who probably doesn’t understand the specifics of the decision of where to make an account.

It released the same year as FF8 and managed to have insanely more depth. It squeezed every last ounce of performance out of that system.

I’m also watching a retrospective on the development of Vagrant Story right now and as a jrpg fan it’s wild to me that I never knew it existed back in the day. What they were able to accomplish in a PSX game is crazy. It makes me want to give it a try also

Every “Spotify” playlist which is what they shove down your throat in every search consists of the same few dozen songs that it thinks I want to listen to. Well if I wanted to listen to the same EDM playlist I’ve already created for myself, I would Spotify. I have to search for specific albums to get any value from the service these days, but that’s difficult when it doesn’t really introduce me to any new music.

As the original comment implied, AP News and Reuters are reasonably unbiased in reliable in terms of their coverage. They do have a US focus so a lot of the pieces need to be read through that specific lens. Sometimes the omission of information is just as important and what is included.

This is how I do it as well. In general, understanding the overall bias of each news organization is more important to keeping yourself informed. You can combat the echo chamber effect by knowing what the biases of each source is and using differing sourcing to try to get as complete a picture as you can.

I would add to your list to check BBC, Al Jazeera, and NPR if you’re US focused.
