Apple, with their M silicon, has been tempting recently, but I really can’t bring myself to pull the trigger when I could have a top of the line Framework for the same price as a middle range MacBook pro. Sure, the MacBook is probably more powerful, but the framework would actually be mine.

That said, in the current ram/ssd economies I’m not buying a laptop at all if I can help it. Unfortunately, I want one so I can edit on the go, and uploading TBs of video footage to my home PC and then editing remotely isn’t going to work, so I’ll probably have to cough up some dough eventually.

We’re sort of required to have a home to sleep and such, and a workplace to make money, so third place is the term that makes sense. Somewhere you aren’t required to be, but you enjoy being.

I don’t understand that explanation. Your workplace doesn’t cost money to exist in, it’s quite the opposite. Often a third place is a pub or something, in which you’re expected to buy a drink or something.

I will say it’s weird to actively not like Linux. It’s OK to think it isn’t for your daily driver PC, but disliking it is weird. It’s undeniably useful as a server OS, and you yourself probably interact with it frequently, even if you don’t know it.

As usual, the solution is education. Parental education needs to be prioritized imo. That said, I have no idea how we would implement such a thing. Most likely better general education would help at least.

I’ve also tried Gnome very briefly before going back to KDE. I never went deep enough to try extensions, as I’d also agree that most of that stuff should be built in to the DE, and I was annoyed by it missing these features that KDE just had out of the box. Hearing that extensions exist kinda reminds me of what I’ve heard about MacOS, where features that have existed on Windows for over a decade and Linux for years still require third party applications.

I’ll add that you can’t just “try” gimp really, you’ll have to learn some new workflows for sure, but yeah, should’ve been top of the list, it’s THE alternative.

I meant a Google FindMy compatible tracker, they ping off of all Android devices, I believe it’s opt-out to be a part of the network. It’s honestly a failure on Google’s part that so many don’t seem to be aware that Google has an alternative to AirTags.

It looks like they have an Android app which means a Linux app could exist, and wouldn’t that do exactly what OP wants to do?

I’m not sure what you mean by that, there’s a plugin that adds FindMy network support to Home Assistant that seems to be up to date. If you mean Google doesn’t support them, I’m also not sure what you mean by that. The app is on my phone, up to date, and tracking devices, same as the Apple network, just with Google devices. If your issue is Pebblebee, there are multiple different brands you can buy from depending on your needs, but generally, a tracker is a tracker.

As far as how well they work to track lost items, I’m honestly not sure, as I haven’t lost anything yet. They should be comparable to an Airtag, as they can ping off of all Android devices unless someone opts out.

Pebble bee I think? They’ve been fine. They’re rechargeable, which is nice.

I use Google FindMy devices which use the same tech as airtags. Still Google, which is bad, but at least I don’t have to buy an iPhone.

I love Gimp, use it every week, and am stoked for 3.2, but I’ll believe that it punches Adobe in the face when I see it.

Man, I love gimp so much, but damn do I wish it had some fancier selection and fill tools. I’ve never actually used photoshop, so I don’t know exactly what I’m missing out on, but from the occasional video I’ve seen, it seems like a lot.

I’m like actually excited for updates to my operating system. That hasn’t been true for Android or Windows in years. The last I remember being excited for an update was iOS on my iPod Touch, but from what I hear, people aren’t even really that hyped for iOS updates any more.

The phone you use on your personal time isn’t, and if an employer mandates that you use an iPhone, they’d better buy it for you.

I absolutely hate that. I’d rather just not be friends with those people. I’d think less of them if they’re not smart enough to use a messaging group that works on more than one type of phone.
