James R Kirk@startrek.websiteto Linux@lemmy.ml•Why doesn't the Linux subreddit leave Reddit already?English11·6 days agoI’m having trouble following, you’re suggesting that the Linux subreddit continues to exist because of some corporate conspiracy to keep users on commercial media platforms?
James R Kirk@startrek.websiteto Linux@lemmy.ml•Atomic Linux Distros: What Barriers Stand Between You and Making the Switch?English2·9 days agoYeah you’re right, “atomic” is not the same thing as “immutable”, but they are related terms and OP appeared to be using them interchangeably so 🤷♀️
James R Kirk@startrek.websiteto Linux@lemmy.ml•Atomic Linux Distros: What Barriers Stand Between You and Making the Switch?English1·9 days agoI didn’t say bricking, I was responding to the bit you wrote about immutability being “a fad”.
James R Kirk@startrek.websiteto Linux@lemmy.ml•Atomic Linux Distros: What Barriers Stand Between You and Making the Switch?English1·10 days agoImmuteability is what enabled me to finally switch over full time. I don’t think a lot of geeks yet realize how huge they are going to be for wider-spread adoption.

Immuteable distros have been a game changer for me and if I’m being honest I think they’re going to be the biggest thing for mainstream adoption in Linux’s entire history.

James R Kirk@startrek.websiteto Linux@lemmy.ml•Why do you use the distro you use?English31·13 days agoHaven’t used the command line since installing Kinoite, it’s… weird.
James R Kirk@startrek.websiteto Linux@lemmy.ml•I'm committing to Linux, but it's so unstable. Any suggestions?English5·19 days agoGood advice, also Fedora’s “atomic” distros are both bleeding edge and extremely stable!
James R Kirk@startrek.websiteto Linux@lemmy.ml•I'm committing to Linux, but it's so unstable. Any suggestions?English3·19 days agoI agree with you completely. No disrespect to Mint, but immutability is (IMO) possibly the most important advancement for Linux adoption in its entire history. I would love to see more distros release immutable versions.
James R Kirk@startrek.websiteto Linux@lemmy.ml•Which Distribution and Desktop Environment should I use?English3·1 month agoLOL yes I try not to speak like a FOSSite when talking with newbies. “Arch Linux does not yet have an adequate solution for the hammer problem (when your computer is hit with a hammer) so I can’t recommend it.”
James R Kirk@startrek.websiteto Linux@lemmy.ml•Which Distribution and Desktop Environment should I use?English2·1 month agoI mean, rollbacks are quite literally a feature to prevent breaking it. That said I’ve never even had to roll back once.
James R Kirk@startrek.websiteto Linux@lemmy.ml•Which Distribution and Desktop Environment should I use?English61·1 month agoFedora Kinoite.
- You will basically never need the terminal.
- Highly tweakable, but out of the box is very similar to windows
- It’s immutable (impossible to break)
- App “store” makes sense and is not weird.
- Extremely fast.
James R Kirk@startrek.websiteto Linux@lemmy.ml•Gonna give Linux another try, any guidance is welcome!English2·2 months agoFedora is a solid choice. I recommend Kinoite because it’s familiar to Windows users and impossible to break.
James R Kirk@startrek.websiteto Privacy@lemmy.ml•Folks who moved from Google to Proton: What do you wish you'd known at the start?English4·2 months ago- The Android widget (not app just the widget) does not have a monthly view.
- There is no office suite (I don’t know why this surprised me but it did).
Generally it’s been an overall positive experience.
