  • The existence of other candidates is not the same thing as any of them having the slimmest chance in hell of winning, and the way our cursed voting system works, they’re going to end up drawing votes away from the “major” candidate that most closely aligns with them. As a result, the “major” candidate they most oppose has one less vote they need to overcome. That means that until and unless a 3rd party candidate manages to completely overshadow one of the major political parties, which is effectively never going to happen, a 3rd party vote is just one more vote your most opposed candidate doesn’t need to beat.

And no, 3rd parties are not going to overshadow the major parties. It’s just not going to happen. Look at the absolute dogshit circus that is Trump, look at how many lifelong Republicans have vowed to never vote for him, how he’s absolutely obliterated any little shred of legitimacy the GOP had as a governing party. Now recognize that with that utterly weakened, vulnerable position, that best chance ever, no 3rd party has managed to even come close to unseating them as one of the inevitable 2 contenders. If it hasn’t happened now, it won’t happen ever, not with FPTP voting.

  • Woah buddy, you’re at about a 9, we need you down at a 3.

“Dad” doesn’t know anything about web design, but he knows (presumably son) makes them, and he ballparked a number making the entirely common armature mistake of thinking it’s as easy as setting up your facebook page. He’s also not demanding anything here. Nothing about this exchange suggests that “Dad” was going to require that the work be done at the stated price. It seemed like

Maybe before you go burning bridges and obliterating a family relation, consider how much easier it is to tell “Dad’s Buddy” that while Dad was well meaning, he was way off, and Buddy is free to compare with other estimates, but $X is actually a much more reasonable value.

  • If you just funnel reddit users onto Lemmy, you’re just going to get a shittier version of Reddit. You’ll be selecting for people who are tired of, can’t use, or rejected from reddit, but didn’t make the move on their own. That will result in growth, but at the cost of quality. Specifically reaching out to reddit users sends the message that you just want to be reddit for people who can’t or won’t use reddit anymore.

Expansion should come naturally. As Lemmy grows and improves, new users will naturally gravitate over, but because it wasn’t some sudden influx of reddit users they’ll be less inclined to just bring Reddit’s culture with them.

Yes, you can. I mean, you’re probably still eating mold and it may or may not be “safe” but you can do it. You probably shouldn’t, however. When you see the mold on the surface, the mycelium have already spread much further. Best case scenario you still need to tear off much more than just the visible mold.
