And let’s be clear, we’re talking about the European OG Georgia, not the US state.

Privacy@lemmy.ml•Switching from Gmail to Tutanota = getting burned instantly
2·24 days agoProton stores senders and subjects in clear text. Only the content of the email is encrypted.
That means that the Swiss government can easily force them to handle out that data.

61·25 days ago+1 for Proton as a security theatre.
Proton is not safe, the Swiss government can (and did, in fact) ask Proton for users’ IP addresses and metadata.
Plus, Proton forces you to use their client instead of standard IMAP.

Piracy: ꜱᴀɪʟ ᴛʜᴇ ʜɪɢʜ ꜱᴇᴀꜱ@lemmy.dbzer0.com•How do I torrent safely in the US if I can't afford a VPN?English
1·29 days agoHonest question, why would you need a VPN if you want to download from private trackers?
Usually, copyright owners target people on public trackers and on the DHT. Not a problem if you only get into private trackers.

100% agree, we live in a 1984 age.
Also, using stupid words such as unalive doesn’t make any sense because the algorithm of social media companies knows exactly what it means.

9·3 months agoYou can run Jellyfin side by side and slowly migrate everyone, starting from the most intelligent users (so you can catch anything that might be wrongly configured, etc.).
In the meantime, I hope that so many users are switching that we’re going to get better native apps.

4·3 months agoThe advantage of private trackers is that:
- torrents almost always have seeds
- you can ask for re-seeds in case they aren’t
- torrents have a good quality
- you’re less likely to receive a complaint letter from copyright holders

I don’t agree with “more privacy”. Data is federated, so anybody can easily scrape and gather data.
Even upvotes/downvotes are public (even if your client doesn’t display them, you can get the list of users that voted your post/comment through the API).
You can be anonymous, create multiple accounts on different instances, you can use a client with not trackers, etc. but I wouldn’t say there’s more privacy.
