It’s inherently an american concept, which is what also annoys me as some Europeans have started importing the concept even though it makes little sense (I don’t really think it makes sense in the US either but the fact that it is imported is just extra stupid).

I think this is what I don’t like about active sort. Just a single comment is all it needs to bump a highly upvoted post to the top. I feel like it should rather look at an aggregate of recent comments or something along those lines, so that a single comment doesn’t cause such a big effect. It’s kinda like if a single vote could move a post to the top.

Hmm citation needed? I’m not so sure a majority is from the US, even if US users is the largest group.
What I find most annoying is stuff like /c/news and /c/politics (on any instance) being actually only about US news or US politics. And then you need /c/world_news to be actual news from around the world. I wish more instances did what Beehaw did and made /c/news into the world news community and then made /c/usnews to be… well, US news.
I think one other thing that might help would be to adjust the “Active” sort. I believe it has some kind of hard-coded 2 day limit? So posts older than 2 days will not show up. The problem is that as the sort is working right now, it often displays posts that are 2 days old. This isn’t great for getting new content. It’d be nice if the “Active” sort (or any other other sorts) parameters could be configured somehow.
Feddit.dk is doing pretty alright - it’s small, for sure, but it’s nice :)

I don’t agree with that. ActivityPub includes methods of censoring and that is by design, for the purpose of moderation.

These suggestions sound like a moderation nightmare. This is definitely not desirable.
Nostr seems to make it much more difficult to weed out the bigots as they don’t have a single point of origin (an instance). When you get to the point of making your own instance, it becomes easy to filter out all the users from that instance in one go, if the instance turns into a nazi bar. That is the difference.
The entire purpose of Nostr is about true censorship resistance and speech autonomy. That doesn’t exist with AP. Even if you self host, others can block your instance and no one will think twice about why the server is on the list.
That is by design in AP. If you self host and your instance gets blocked, that’s between you and the other instance. You can still speak all you want, the other instance is just not listening any more. You’ve been excluded from the instance that blocked you because you didn’t follow their rules. So participate in other communities and try to follow their rules and you probably won’t be excluded.
“True censorship resistance” and “speech autonomy” sounds dangerously close to “free speech absolutism” (“freeze peach”).

Also if you don’t like your admin on an ActivityPub instance, you can just go to an instance with admins you trust better or make your own instance.
Well, in that case, maybe this is interesting to you. I ran a user survey last year for my instance and anyone else wanting to answer and one question was age. Here’s the age group graph:
The y-axis is number of respondents, x-axis is age group. Obviously this only applies to the people that responded to the survey and thus might not apply in general to the fediverse, but it’s probably an indication. And, well, it’s mostly smoothly distributed without any major gaps or humps (slight hump at 30-34 but not sure if that’s statistically significant).
