I bought a Pixel for it (I needed a phone upgrade) and installed GrapheneOS immediately after bringing it home. There was a little bit of friction because a few things weren’t working out of the box for me, like Android Auto and a few apps that use GPS (I tried to Pokemon Go, for example) but all these issues went away eventually. The only thing I miss is tapping my phone to pay for things, but this isn’t a GrapheneOS issue, (bank/card providers in north America and their reliance on Google Wallet/Apple pay are). There are financial institutions from other countries that offer tap to pay using their own app.

I love being able to select what files/contacts each app has access on my phone. I like being able to disable my camera/microphone for all apps with a simple touch.

I stopped using Telegram as soon as I learned their chats aren’t E2E encrypted unless you create a secret chat. Their advertising is so misleading. Even WhatsApp is more private than Telegram.

It depends on your bank. I have brazilian banks that work perfectly well with tap, they just don’t rely on Google Wallet.

What is the alternative to Ubuntu (lets pretend snap doesn’t exist) if recommending someone a distro where you don’t need to use the CLI to install apps?

Unfortunately there are many apps that can’t be found on flathub/discover.

I was always curious but never moved over completely because I had this idea that it was difficult to run things (games, etc). I had a laptop with dual boot with Ubuntu for the longest time, then I started to use WSL to code.

The thing that made me finally switch was the steam deck. It showed me it was possible and now we don’t have a single machine with Windows at home.

Thinking about it now, I don’t know why everyone kept recommending to use Ubuntu, it was probably one of the main reasons why it took me so long to switch.

Lemmy is in such bad shape that this is the kind of engagement you get in many communities. There isn’t a discussion anymore, only “I don’t like this” or “You are being dumb for using this”.

Of course we assume that since people can’t bothered to write more than a single line about a topic, they just want to feel better about themselves.
