Hosting video on a significant scale is very expensive. Stupendously expensive.

Convincing people to join is also going to cost a lot of money. Consumers are on YT because creators are there, and they are already used to the platform. Creators are there because the consumers are there. And there is a robust infrastructure to make a living from content creation.

Financing is especially difficult for such a project, because companies are willing to pay way more for targeted ads. For which you need some data about your users. The more data you collect, the better the and targeting can be, the more companies are willing to pay.
Assuming there are enough users for companies to pay for advertising at all.

I simply wouldn’t take a job with a one hour per way commute. Takes me 15-20 minutes max, and one less work day a week sounds sweet.

Community to make fun of conspiracy theorists. Used to be wacky, “I think the birds outside my window are working for the government, anyone know a crystal that can help me” sort of thing, became a little sad with COVID.

On the ole 600euro communities you regularly see people posting these screenshots as “proof” of tracking devices in vaccinations.

I’m not talking about the gun rack, I’m talking about the gun. A gun is no mundane tool.

No I won’t leave my gun “accidentally” anywhere. Handling a gun means “accidentally” is not part of your vocabulary.

I’m a gun owner myself, so I’m not the pearl clutching type but this is genuinely unthinkable to me. Absurd and a little scary, to be honest.

But with fire arm thefts etc it was pretty rare to actually have a gun loaded or unloaded in the gun-rack.

Because someone is willing to pay for them. The internet isn’t a nonprofit project anymore like in the 90s when it was run by universities. For better and for worse.

Of course you can block communities in Jerboa. But not instances, as OP wrote. That just isn’t a feature in Lemmy.

Blocking communities sucks because more and more pop up. I’d love to block the entire instance.
