I’ve avoided Microsoft for years, but recently I’ve been reducing my Google use. I’m still on Gmail, and Street View is special, but I’ve been slowly replacing Google utilization:

• Chrome: Firefox
• Home: Home Assistant (WIP)

Upcoming projects include replacing my phone’s Google-built Android image and transitioning to ProtonMail.

It’s not one big project, it’s lots of projects. It’s worthwhile, though. Along the way, I’ve reconnected with my love of good tech and I’ve gained new hobbies like privacy and contributing to OSM.

After using it since Lucid Lynx 10.04, I switched from Ubuntu to Mint last weekend. I’m lazy about distros these days, and I really didn’t want to switch, but Firefox instability was driving me nuts. The web browser must be reliable, IMO. It’s a fundamental requirement for a desktop OS, and this problem didn’t exist before snaps.

OP, here’s another one! This one’s also pointing out incorrect facts about Arkansas!

Goodness, that needs to stop. I’ll concede it’s a life saving tool during natural disasters or in places where tap water is unavailable, but the rest of the time it’s a symbol of waste and ignorance. On my walks I see at least one half full bottle of water every day on the ground. Some dummy paid real money for it, then couldn’t be bothered to even dispose of it properly.

This is a positive take. No OS is perfect, but there are lots of reasons to give a Linux distro a whirl. Tech right now IMO has become disappointing, but Linux continues to be a shining beacon of fun and hope.

It would cost me at least 15 hours of free time a week in commute and at least $800 extra a month. Then there’s the physiological strain of being trapped in a car and that’s not good for my back and hips. Let’s not forget “Jane,” my obnoxious “I don’t like Trump but” conservative coworker who has loud and vocal political opinions that I can help but overhear because she sits in the undersized fluorescent lit cubicle next to mine in my dark, dusty, windowless office. No thanks. I’m much happier at home.

Follow-up: The icing on the cake was a release or so ago when apt started queueing the snap package’s installation instead. Very clever, but also a confusing user experience. It took a few iterations before I understood the snap was getting installed instead of the deb.

Firefox is one of the worst snaps. It pops up an annoying notification everyday reminding you to restarted it. Then came the crashing. It got to a point where I couldn’t keep my browser running more than a few minutes at a time.

I wanted to like snaps, and I’m not overall negative on Ubuntu, but keeping the web browser functional is minimum requirement. The Firefox PPA is much more reliable.

I believe this is true. Progressivism is just one thing I like about the state. It’s also gorgeous. Big Sur, San Francisco, Yosemite, sequoias, numerous vineyards, craggy beaches, and scenery that can transition from valley to plains to desert to mountains in just a couple hours’ drive.

Certain informative, niche communities like /r/neovim, /r/prequelmemes, and er, um /r/sex. I know there are comparable communities here, but the volume is missing. OTOH, everyone is much friendlier here. And, a smaller user base means our comments don’t get buried among thousands. Also, I’m really enjoying new-to-me communities /c/risa.

Similarly, I read winget as “wing it”. The traditional package managers had better names: apt, yum, pacman. I know it’s a terrible reason to like a package manager, but still, a good name goes a long way.
