Yup, xmpp is the way to be still IMO.

Yes but it wasn’t marketed that way. Which is why there is more interest.
Apple has been blatantly obvious that they want it to remain proprietary and exclusively on their hardware.
Because imessage is proprietary and apple is against it being publicly available and a standard.
Oh I’m not complaining. Its quick and simple to navigate. I don’t need flash, I need function.
I wouldn’t mind updates with that aspect kept in mind, but I’m not going to complain about it either. I think more websites could use debian.org as an example.
A core developer quit and forked it to make freenginx, based on a claim of corporate interference in security practices.
This was about 6 months ago and probably what you are thinking of. Its still open source, there doesn’t seem to be anything that’s come of the issue that was the cause of the split, and nginx is still actively developed.
it feels like when Debian had a website in 2015 that looked like 1997
As a Debian user… Its the same in 2024.
I’m not exactly the typical user here, but honestly Resolve is the best option on Linux. My caveat here is that I run Resolve on my stable box, which is a Debian box, and works beautifully.
codec support is the issue as a free version, but two things there - if you’re editing, mp4 is generally not what you want anyway, and you can just use ffmpeg (or any variety of tools that use ffmpeg underneath but give you a gui) if you’ve got a file you need that its the only container format.
If you’re doing it professionally, its $300, and worth buying. Much like buying Reaper for the whopping cost of $60 (personal)/$225 (commercial).
Regarding Wayland support, I think the first release addressing it was around March or April, and is fully supported in Resolve 19. I haven’t tested, because my Debian Stable box is not using Wayland, so I personally won’t test probably for a few months (or if I get an itch to try it on my 1700x Arch box).
GPU just needs OpenCL 1.2, so despite some previous snafus (needing nvidia) with GPU, AMD works just fine.
Windows? Mouse without borders
Linux/Mac/mix of that and windows? Barrier.
If, of course, you can install things on your work laptop.
Ok, so had to mention while looking at some game stuff to install… I remembered that I have a gog account, grabbed lutris, and boy is Quest for Glory 1 entertaining on this! QFG2-5 installed as well, unfortunately the touchscreen doesn’t work great in that mode. Solaar + a spare logitech mouse and off to play… Going to have to grab my steam controller when I get up. I think a stupid fun classic game/emulation station is what this is going to be! (At least until I decide to do something else)
Agreed - lets be honest, Lenovo put zero thought into this. Its just a tiny with a screen basically glued to the top, and tons of poorly managed cables coming out of the back. You could technically get away with just the power cord on it since it has wifi, but its kind of nonsensical that way. I could build a battery pack, but… meh.
Small arcade is definitely a fun idea though, something I could stick in the living room. Since it has two video outs as well, I could set it up to take over the TV or just be a standalone as the mood strikes.
My one amendment would be - forget Ubuntu and variants, just Debian is fine with older hardware. Less headaches and hassles, and some snaps.
I’d even say Mint Debian Edition over Ubuntu.
Honestly I wouldn’t use Endeavour for my work machine, I’d stick to Debian. Work, to me, needs to be extremely stable. The only time I’ll run something other than Debian for work stuff is to test a specific distribution for a specific need.
Home PC I’m more flexible on, I’ve just been using Debian/it’s derivatives for so long it’s second nature for me. If there was something that felt as current and flexible as Endeavour, but based around Debian, that would be my choice in a heartbeat for home use.
But aside from the stuff that runs Oracle Linux (vendor system), every other system (be it a desktop, LXC, or server) is Debian based. Doesn’t break unless it’s the hardware, and I’ve got HA to deal with that.
If it’s for work, it used to be all RHEL (or Oracle). I’m stuck with Oracle for one specific type of system, but all the RHEL is getting replaced with stable AF Debian now. Which is great, since I prefer Debian to pretty much anything else, especially for servers.
Ubuntu I have no interest in touching anymore unfortunately. It was snaps that did it for me. It’s unfortunate because it used to be a distro I really liked, but boy has canonical just been working things downhill the past several years (for me at least, I’m sure others are fine with it).
Desktop I keep swinging between Debian and endeavor, to the point where I just have them both as VMs and just swap which is active with the GPU passthrough…
A long while ago, I used to use kdissert (now semantik) to make all my white papers, from mind map to document, generating latex out, fine tune, and just gorgeous.
Then I was forced to put them in word and hand it off to our graphics design people to put it into InDesign.
I think I’m going to try semantik for more than mind maps again.
There are plenty of solutions out there that are debian or RHEL only, it will work on other distributions but they aren’t supported. If you have a problem, the answer will be “Use Debian” or “Use RHEL”. And there is nothing wrong with that answer.
I appreciate they are trying to support users who are veering away from the recs, but that’s on them. As is not just using flatpak - which I personally don’t like using, but absolutely use for work/commercial software.
It’s not readable in general, but the first screenshot is about the mods being complicit, the second is the post in question. The post claims a way to “unlock coursehero, chegg + more” and points to a discord. There isn’t really more than that.
u/dysgraphical then said:
The mod u/ Furdiburd10 who manually approved and stickied the post has been removed from the mod team. Reddit’s spam filter actually caught it early on and the community helped mass report. They also fully censored comments from yall calling it out.
Sorry we let this slip. This shit happened seven years ago too for folks that were around that time: https://torrentfreak.com/reddits-piracy-sub-reddit-reopens-after-mutiny-shutdown-170523/
Edit: If you were banned by this loser or muted, please DM me and I’ll comb through the logs and work on reinstating you back.
I tried to see about grabbing the post by pirat_nation for the screenshots, but the tweet doesn’t show and I don’t have/won’t use a twitter account.
Pretty much everything is available in a package manager, flatpaks, etc.
If you’re at the point of building from source, I don’t think you’re in regular user territory to start with.
Just to note here, resolve is also much better than premier, even the free version. Considering the Adobe pricing, buying studio for $300 is a better decision imo.
kdenlive is solid for the simple cut/fade type of work.
I’d also add something I’ve mentioned elsewhere for pictures - in case of raws, paint.net is ok, but imo darktable+krita is a much better experience.
I’ve definitely trimmed some artists from my personal music library over their politics.
