  • A lot of these groups might not be as gender exclusive as they may appear?

I looked up our local mens shed and membership is not gender restricted. The objects of association are focussed on issues related to men, but membership is not restricted. I suspect that this is fairly typical amongst mens sheds in Australia.

There are Dads groups and Mums groups, and these are also not very exclusive. I’m a cis-male and attended a “mums group” with our new born twins. Yes it was literally called a mums group. I felt welcome, although at one point I left the room when I felt as though the conversation was headed towards the physical effects of pregnancy and birth on mothers, just because I didn’t want anyone else to feel uncomfortable.

I can see that a group which excludes a gender could develop a toxic culture, but I don’t think gender exclusive groups are necessarily bad because of that risk.

Unrelated but… having lived through the 00’s I always found writable CDs and DVDs to be such a shit unreliable tech. It always seemed like discs might work ok with some drives but not others, or just stop working after a few weeks, and they really didn’t seem tolerant to even minor scratches. Just awful.

  • I think any accountant and lawyer does this to some extent, if I’m honest.

There’s no obligation to take on any client. If a client has a problem to be solved but very little money, of course we’re reluctant to get involved. If it’s a situation where a potential solution is “you should call the tax office and tell them XYZ.” then that’s really just a polite way of telling them you don’t want to get involved.

Lawyers will work in a similar way, but are more likely to truncate their advice to “You should call <whatever regulator> and ask them what to do”.

I’ve often heard of lawyers explaining to potential clients that the costs in pursuing their matter would be unreasonable given the likelihood of success.

It’s not really altruism, although I’d like to think that I do my best to help people when I can. It’s really just a natural way of avoiding doing a heap of work for someone who can’t afford to pay you. Additionally, if you can make the client feel like you’ve helped them instead of just rejecting them then they will be more likely to recommend you to their friends and family who may be a better fit.

  • I can’t speak for everyone but I wouldn’t apply that kind of pricing structure to someone who couldn’t afford it or wouldn’t get any value from it.

I’m an accountant and tax consultant.

Suppose a client contacted me, they’re semi-retired with very little income, they need to resolve some business affairs from years ago in order to collect a pension or whatever. I’m going to tell them the hackiest workaround to achieve their goal, and tell them how to do it themselves, hopefully without really having to charge them even for the consult.

On the other hand if someone wants to sell their family farm for several million dollars and wants to know the tax ramifications, they’re going to get the “particularly complex area” pricing, full written report, and so on and so forth.

  • There’s no doubt that it’s more wear and tear on your clothes.

Like if I put on a pair of shorts I’m probably going to sit around in them for most of the day and then take them off before bed. Several hours in the drier where it’s hot and they’re rubbing around on everything is surely going to be the equivalent of many days worth of “wearing them”.

  • This is one of the difficulties with these releases - assessing the credibility of the information in each document is difficult. In this case, what you’ve just revealed might be obvious to anyone reviewing the actual document, but clearly no one is bothered doing that, and just assumes someone else will.

As the accusations pile up and no one does anything about any of it, the prevailing assumption is that none of it is reliable - of course the reality is that there must be dozens of identifiable witnesses who have or will provide testimony.

If I were the Trump Admin’s PR boss, I’d probably be making posts containing fake Epstein documents, just to undermine the credibility of anything claiming to be an Epstein release.

No, you’re thinking of clockwise vs counter clockwise.

As the shell spirals around itself, it does not create a flat disk. Rather, it creates a cone shape.

If Jeremy was pointed North, the point of his cone would point to the west, while most other snails would point east.

You can see it in the photo on this post.
