think of the flux as shaving cream and the heat gun as a razor that shaves off everything it touches (for enough time). You cover the components you don’t want shaved off with kapton tape, apply the preheating heat (swirl the heat gun around the component too), melt the flux after applying a small amount of heat to preheat the area and then apply the regular heat
