I’m wondering if the HD2 mouse issue was bc he had a controller plugged in as well.

1·14 days agoYup, coffee lake is when intel quick sync gained HEVC 10-bit. I had a 6th gen in my server for a while and that one needed h.264 content.

1·15 days agoI’ve noticed that things recorded on film hold up much better to low resolution compared to digitally filmed content.

8·15 days agoThe biggest issue with downloading x265 stuff from the high seas is that so many of them are just x264 that’s been re-encoded in x265, resulting in smaller file sizes but reduced quality as well. x265 is superior in almost every way technically speaking but it needs a good source material, not an x264 reencode. Their “golden rule” is more like a rule of thumb and I absolutely wouldn’t use some blanket criteria like resolution or dynamic range.

8·3 months agoI’m throwing in my vote for CachyOS. Not because it’s the easiest to use (though it isnt difficult imo) but because it works out of the box, then they have nice wiki to guide you through simple things (like using Lutris and Proton). It’s also Arch based so there’s the arch wiki to fall back on. I ran Windows for 35 years and just switched to Linux in like October, fwiw.

8·4 months agoI bought a lifetime pass for 100 bucks about 10 years ago, and have had 10 years of not having to give a shit about these announcements. I’ve saved well over 100 bucks on streaming services in that time. Worth it 1000%.

3·4 months agoHalitosis was already the medical term for bad breath, with evidence of its use in England. All that word did was give an American businessman/marketer a polite euphemism to talk about something that was considered taboo at the time (body odors were associated with poor hygiene and lower status people). It does seem like they pushed hard with marketing to make it into a more widespread “problem” though.

4·4 months agoI was born in the late 80s, grew up in the 90s and 2000s, and it’s both fascinating and terrifying to me how much of what I thought was just “standard” stuff was influenced by marketing 50-100 years before I was even born. Santa Clause as a jolly old man with rosy cheeks and a snow white beard wasn’t a big thing until Coca-Cola made it part of their advertising in the 30s. The bacon with breakfast thing was the result of a food packaging company in the 1920s hiring a man named Edward Bernays to help them sell more bacon. Bernays was allegedly so good at marketing/manipulation that people like Hitler and Goebbels kept copies of his books. Orange juice became a thing because orange producers in Florida in the early 1900s made too many oranges for the market (in an attempt to beat out California as the country’s orange production state), and juicing them was considered a better alternative to reducing production.

1·4 months agoHave you seen Archer? It’s an animated comedy but it hits some of the same vibes, at least for the first 3-4 seasons. Things get… weird after that.

16·4 months agoBurn Notice. I dont know what it is but it’s like watching a version of “How It’s Made” from a fictional universe. All of the voiceovers about spycraft are bullshit but my brain just buys it for whatever reason.
Also, can’t belive I forgot this, but “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia”.

Cachy has been basically rock solid for me, after figuring out a couple nvidia issues. The biggest problem I faced was trying to understand wine/proton prefixes for restoring saves files on some of my older games. Though I’m running Plasma which I guess is kinda “vanilla” compared to these fancier DEs. Props to the Cachy team and the Arch Wiki team for having such a vast wealth of information available that’s pretty easy to follow!
