So true. As a kid a was in a booklovers’ mail club where I’d get a couple books appropriate for my age and I loved it. I always was working through something up through high school and college.

But grad school required reading hundreds of pages of research for class every week and I was just exhausted from it. I think I only made it through the Harry Potter books throughout my PhD. I go through periods where I’ll get through a couple books, and there’s a few writers I follow, but I haven’t gotten back to loving reading the way I used to.

Yeah I do think there is something to the culture of MBA programs. All the information available for current and prospective students at my university was very much of the tone that mbas change the world. The halls of the business school were filled with famous rich people who’d visited the school or gifted money along with plaques about MBA grads and the amazing things they did. It’s just full of subtle reminders about how the degree is a gateway to being some big powerful person. I’m sure that makes an impact on the students’ attitudes.

I have a PhD in research psychology, and worked with researchers in a lot of other disciplines. I have been mansplained about topics in my field (including the topic of my dissertation) by more MBAs than any other field. More often than not they are vastly oversimplifying or just getting things completely wrong. Try telling them that though and it’s like talking to a wall.

Conspiracy voice is reading to me like grad school voice. Just replace the suspicious overtones with condescension and ridicule.

AMEN. I’m sure many women will agree with me that getting hit on in a linkedin dm is so demoralizing.

I’ve had men as me if I did sex documentaries (?), just tell me I’m hot, and ask to connect because I look like I’m nice, all sorts of creepy stuff. These guys have impressive profiles and look like they’re doing well, but they are slimeballs and it made me not want to use LinkedIn at all, which is hard when you’re on the job Markey.

It also sucks for the hiring manager who has to interview candidates they know they won’t hire just to stick to the process. It’s a waste of everyone’s time.

Anybody have any idea what the ethical standards might be that he’s referring to? Not sure if there’s a scandal or something or just an overall sense of displeasure with the field.

I agree with other replies here with one addition. People who get into grad school are generally the high achievers from their high school and undergrad programs, so they are used to being the only or one of few star students. In PhD programs everyone is a star student, so it can be a bit jarring to folks used to being head of the class when they suddenly aren’t.

It can cause a bit of jealousy and competitive thinking but most of the time students get past it and focus simply on enduring the gauntlet.

A professor I was taking a management class with gave me a fun burn on my thesis. I asked for his input on a specific point and he called it “intellectual masterbation” and proceeded to talk for 15 min or so about ideas he thought i should have studied instead (I was already preparing for my thesis defense so couldn’t change topics). Never got an answer on the actual question I’d raised.

Same. It’s nice to have a way to quickly look through a bunch of options (even if 95% of them are shitty Chinese counterfeits). I’ll even look through the reviews and see if anything glaring jumps out. But I haven’t been a prime member since they put ads in prime video and haven’t really missed it.

That person went to a department that was WAY less toxic than mine was.

That said, my committee was lovely and my thesis and dissertation were relatively low-stress compared to some of the horror stories I’ve heard.

As a psychologist who was regularly taunted in school for being in a “soft science” this amuses me. Welcome to the reproducibility crisis, biologists.

The story in Horizon Forbidden West is pretty good too. There’s a whole bit in the dlc about Ted Faro that I did not see coming, but it makes me think a lot of the tech bros running things today.
