The joke would have worked a lot better if Larry’s friends were different shapes. There’s no visual reason why Larry is the only one that can act as the key.

Agreed, look at all the natural variation that was lost. The newcomers don’t convey the same intensity of emotions.

I’ve noticed that too! I wonder if it’s some sort of watermark generated either by the meme generator program or by the website hosting the image. Anything I see on FB, for example, has these weird artifacts, or even entire words blanked out or garbled.
