  • The difference is I didn’t pull a lever or make a choice to help ensure that those people who die every day would die. And I disagree about ignoring things because I “have no reasonable influence” over them. I might not be able to change the fact that people die every day, but I sure as hell can act responsibly to help make sure I’m not part of the problem (i.e, I’m a safe driver, I don’t drink, I don’t own a gun, etc.). I do not think that anyone on earth is more non-ignorant of and conscientious about the plight of others on this planet, something I think about constantly.

  • What is it about spiders, especially black shiny ones, that brings out the ICK factor and the OOG factor. I’d rather deal with the guy on the left, and I really don’t want to do that at all. There’s something about radial symmetry - having lots of legs in a radial pattern that is somehow frightening to our brains, I think. Remember the fence around the forbidden lands in Planet of the Apes? It looked like big spiders to me and scared me as a kid.

  • :( poor turtle orphling. I don’t agree that the secret to a long life is a burden free life, but that the secret to a long life is strength that comes from meeting and resolving the challenges that get thrown at you. It’s not the easy things but the hard things that give you scars that make you stronger.

  • This is satire, absolutely. Yet not inaccurate in terms of how “Christian” bigots actually think vaccines work. You can tell how illiterate and uneducated someone is by how few vaccines they’ve bothered to get for themselves or their children. And such worthless vermin SHOULD go and die, and leave the rest of us to be responsible adults as we are meant to be.

  • I’d love to go to that kind of party, where rainbow cake is served along with a slice of anthropological oration. But even though I’m gay (and therefore supposed to accept every odd idea that comes along, apparently), I’m not sure gender is a “social construct” alone. There are so many other things that can play into it including hormones and body image and psychological stuff - yet I still feel it was so much easier and breezier when we could just call ourselves men or women or he or she. *(not that I’m against people calling themselves whatever else they want).

  • C’mon you gotta love the original Star Trek series at the very least. I mean it was a milestone and it’s still my favorite of all the Treks out there.

The fact that it has so many communities (for Trek in general) shows that it really resonates with people across the board. I can’t think of many other shows that have achieved that. Its the mix of science fiction and adventure with very human emotions and problems that make it so appealing, I think.
