There goes my chance to use my data hoarding for the power of good. Well, if you think of any specific details that might help track it down let me know.

I may have them. Do you remember what you were looking for?

Nah, Idaho can get fucked.

I’d take that page with a grain of salt, especially since it is quite old and not all of it valid anymore, but I agree that generally you hear the good things about Matrix. Even disregarding what that site has to say, I’d give XMPP a look. XMPP likely isn’t all rainbows either, but I like the traction it is getting and it did a lot of things right in my mind.
I’m not the person you replied to, but a lot of my friends that pushed us to initially use Matrix have grown unhappy with the direction it’s gone and really dislike the clients. I personally host a private Matrix server and I am fine with it for now, but I’m able to avoid most of the drama and bugs by simply not moving to the latest and greatest. I always liked XMPP in the past, but I haven’t used it in a few years. I am glad to see it picking up support and hope that some of the things I didn’t like about it (which I can’t seem to recall at the moment :) ) are no longer problems or at least may get some traction on resolving.
I confirmed this with my own SDR years ago after seeing a presentation about it at DEFCON.
Can’t argue with that… until something goes wrong and I hate it (really just mad at myself)
I imagine it gunks up the lock mechanism. I have had to eventually replace locks I used it in.
true, but we also hate computers

It’s possible I’ll never go to one again. I wouldn’t have bought the tickets had I known about that bullshit.

The new version of the OS (KaiOS which is a fork of the dead Firefox OS) broke compatibility and Meta apparently decided to not bother with supporting it.

My daughter asked to replace her smartphone with one of the flip phones. It was only $70, so I got her one. It’s build quality is what you would expect, but it works and has GPS at least.

I feel like there will be a nontrivial market for de-googled or older and unlocked Android phones after this. If they manage to kill off custom roms with their previous AOSP rug pull I’ll go back to using a (subpar) Linux phone or maybe even one of those cheap flip phones.

Also take a look at the plugins from the main menu. it comes with a bunch and most are disabled by default. It is also, if you are so technically inclined, relatively easy to write new plugins in Python.
I figured that the point of using a dumb phone would be that there hopefully wouldn’t be meaningful accounts, information, and communication to really get at. Regular calls and SMS were already fair game, and there is basically nothing else on there. Nothing for evil megacorps to siphon up, no social media, not much of anything.
