What if Vampirism is a bacterial infection and it makes the wielder drink blood because that is what sustains the bacteria. I think I’m just imagining Parasite Eve again, but with bacteria in place of mitochondria.

In the video game series The Elder Scrolls, vampirism is actually contracted as a disease that can be cured if you catch it soon enough.

But also it’s a magical curse from Molag Bal.

Though the metaphysics of TES are weird enough that it’s not really safe to assume anything has the same underlying cause as it would in the real world (e.g. sunlight comes from another dimension through a tear in space). So maybe all diseases are actually curses in the setting.

Possibly. I know that the vampire disease is canonically different between the Cyrodill and Skyrim regions.

IIRC rabies has quite a few similarities to various vampire myths (e.g. aversion to water, aversion to strong smells, aggression).
