What are we supposed to do with it?

I’ve only ever used regedit (on a linux distro) with wine tricks to try to get script mods to work for games. I think it was GTA, and skse and I don’t think it fixed my issue I was just blindly following whatever I read on reddit might make it work. I’m so glad proton has matured it used to take me a couple days to figure out how to get one game to run on Linux. I hated setting up prefixes, and messing with winetricks when I barely knew what I needed.

I didn’t look at the page but others are saying that might be the usecase and that checks out with me.

If you’re on bazzite maybe this is a way for you to get access to tools on a immutable system? Though I think on bazzite you would just use steam tinkers launcher to access wine/proton tricks no? Its a flatpack so should be on discover store, and you can’t install winetricks through CLI.

I’ve had to modify disc assignments on my Windows install to get it to boot properly, having a registry editor in Linux would have been so convenient.

I can also see some use cases for using it to modify Wine prefixes rather than regedit.

I’ve used a registry editor on Linux before to pull the Bluetooth pairing keys off my Windows partition so I could add them to my Linux Bluetooth config so the Bluetooth device would work on both systems.

Could you please explain a bit, do you mean that otherwise your bluetooth device would not auto-connect to both devices?

I mean, you probably can’t use them simultaneously anyway?

They said windows partition so I’m assuming they mean when they boot into Linux the Bluetooth device just works instead of needing to redo the pairing process.

I think they meant that they copied the keys from Windows to Linux so that they can easily pair their Bluetooth device without having to repair when booting into the other OS.

        https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Bluetooth#Dual_boot_pairing

So without doing it, I think you have to forget and repair every time you want to connect your Bluetooth device if it was paired with the other OS. If keys are copied, you can just connect it without hassle. I did it so that I can pair my controller by just pressing its Power button, and it does not worry about whether my computer is running Linux or Windows.

You can, BT >5.0 supports up to 2 simultaneous devices.

I actually deleted a comment I was going to leave about Proton (Wine) using windows registry. It does use the registry, but the files are text, TOML-ish style so a tool like this isn’t needed for Proton and I assume Wine.

Fix the registry of your friends and family of course!

Also, probably for wine/proton/umu since they use registry files as well.

If you use Windows, you can install that software to browse your registry. If you have already set up Flatpak via WSL or whatever, I can imagine that being a decent option.

I don’t understand that message. Why would anyone run a Linux app through WSL on a machine where the application is available native on Windows?

I do that kind of dumb crap all the time because restoring a workbench machine is a pain in the ass and I’d prefer to not surface a foreign hive to it.
