My friend said he had a dream where he suddenly understood the meaning or purpose of existence, and it was simple and clear, but when he woke up he couldn’t remember it. It wasn’t 42.
Dream logic is so real though
Yeah I’ve had similar experiences, not with the meaning of life but thinking I solved some technical thing, but no memory of the solution. But I remember feeling great about having figured it out, which is what I think we actually dream about.
d/dx? But of course, it’s 1/x.
Χ+ψ√+δ9(39-ση)π3{μςκ%÷×ξδ83}. Solve this one.
Chai + Psi + delta 9 (39-sigma-nu) Pi 3 {nu sigma kappa percent divide times epsilon delta 83}
The meaning is complex, but the themes are clear:
Chai + Psi + Delta9
Tea, Psychic powers, and the Delta-quadrant / Deep Space Nine: Obvious Star Trek (Voyager/DS9) reference.
(39 sigma nu) Pi 3
Miku (Japanese: “3” “9”) is a new singer with Sigma tendencies and released a pie 3 years ago
nu sigma kappa percent divide times epsilon delta 83
This new japanese sigma character uses their money (“cent”) to polarize (“divide”) the press (“times”) by using Delta flight 83 (Paris <-> Atlanta)
Putting it together
Miku Hatsune released a pie 3 years ago, which was critically acclaimed and condemned after they were caught watching Star Trek on a Delta airlines flight to Paris from Atlanta.
Bravo! You did it! The prize is a nothing!
Whilst I agree with your premise, I must issue the counter-claim of:

… quantum mechanics, I’m sure you all remember.
I remember doing that. No, my PhD never arrived.
I’m sure you all remember
Only thing I know about quantum mechanics is someone on TikTok using Schrödinger’s cat to justify manifesting.
People use QM to “justify” a whole bunch of woo. I have seen even people with PhDs do it.
I’m 100% not joking, I once was stuck the the proof of a theorem for a whole week going at it and still wasn’t able to prove it… until I dreamed of the solution, woke up at like 3 am, quickly wrote a skecth of my dream’s proof and went back to sleep. The following morning I checked that path and boom, there it finally was the solution.
Weirdly enough, this happened twice, although that second time I didn’t woke up at 3 am, just in the following morning as usual.
I remember in grad school I had to solve a lot of things in the shower. Something about it the water hitting you and the White noise.
I read somewhere that Mick Jagger (or maybe it was Keith Richard) wrote the riff of Satisfaction in his sleep.
He woke up, grabbed a tape recorder and went “Bum bum. Bumbumbuummm bumbumbum.” And sang the one line “I, can’t, get noo, sat-tis-fac-tion.” And then went back to sleep.
Forgot about it the next morning till they were at band practice and someone found the tape and played it.
I too have written down riffs from my dreams. Also I am not a famous rock star.
Draw your own conclusions.
Obviously the main conclusion to draw is that you need more sleep
I’m struggling to determine what conclusion I’m supposed to draw
Satisfaction was a hit because Jagger has skill, not because he dreamt it.
I didn’t say it wasn’t both. If Keith didn’t dream it, Mick’s skill couldn’t have made it a hit because it wouldn’t have existed.
I’m trying to figure out what point you’re trying to make and there doesn’t seem to be one
That dreaming a riff is not difficult.
Okay dude. But what’s your point?
was Keith Richard
Can someone explain the formula? Is it real? What does it do?
I miss PugJesus :( he would usually explain these things
What happened to PugJesus?
He’d been unhappy with some stuff the Lemmy devs do for a while, but when kbin shut down, he moved to lemmy, and when piefed seemed like a reasonable alternative moved his accounts and communities to piefed.social.
Then rimu decided that a handful of most active users with hundreds or thousands of upvotes per day shouldn’t get to have such an impact, so he installed a daily cap for how many votes per user per day are counted, discarding the rest. Essentially, this limits engagement in an attempt to “even out” its distribution by cutting off the top. It’s an opt-out feature for other piefed instances, but on his own (piefed.social), he obviously activated it.
PugJesus, being one of those most active users, was quite upset with the prospect of having to ration his upvotes. By his own description, he’d easily fill out much of that cap just upvoting all the good-faith replies on his posts, let alone if he were to also engage in discussion elsewhere and equally use upvotes there to encourage good-faith conversation. It evidently caused anxiety and soured his experience.
Even if he were to use an account from a different instance, that restriction still affects the communities. Having migrated three times already (idk what the third one was, but given how much effort even one move for a whole community can be…), PJ was tired of it and didn’t wanna migrate again. So he did what rimu wanted:
Stop engaging.
(He’s around, occasionally, but not nearly as active, nor does he post as much. Can’t blame him. Sure isn’t helping that there’s a certain subset of people that hate him for various reasons. He’d probably respond if I summoned him, but I’m not sure I want to drag him back to that topic and make him feel like he has to comment.)

Yay my first fediverse drama!!!
One of today’s… lucky? ten thousand, I guess
You’ve missed so much. I won’t catch you up because none of it matters, and being aware of petty drama among a group of redditors will not improve your life.
I disagree I think it will add value and wisdom to my life. I haven’t spoken to another person in real life for 68 days as of now so parasocial is the closest I can get!!!
Why is moving account such a chore, again?
Not just accounts, communities. He was managing a few communities he’d migrated over to piefed who would continue to be affected by that limit even if he switched account, essentially shadowbanning his votes at some point.
Moving a community means hoping that enough regulars see the notification to “jumpstart” the new community to the point the new posts show up in /all for the rest of the old community to pick up on it and realise they’re not subscribed. You’ll also need to keep reminding people posting in the old community to post to the new one instead for a while.
It’s kinda founding a new community for a topic that already has an established community, then trying to get that established one to join your new one.
That’s a lot of effort I can see him no longer wanting to do.
daily cap for how many votes per user per day are counted
Ok, but this is good actually, there’s a lot more accounts voting a dozen times a minute for hours than people actually reading a thousand comments a day and responding accordingly.
Ok, but this is good actually, there’s a lot more accounts voting a dozen times a minute for hours than people actually reading a thousand comments a day and responding accordingly.
By Rimu’s own data, there were about five users who were above the ‘cap’ of 240 a day. None of which he suspected of being bots.
Sorry that you can’t do basic math, or understand that an upvote is precisely so one doesn’t have to type a response.
Source?
Last I followed that conversation, rimu stated that it wasn’t about vote manipulation or spam, just about the outsized influence of people who spend more time online (for instance because they’re chronically ill and the offline world therefore just doesn’t hold any appeal to them).
Your comment took a few seconds to read in my inbox. If I made a post that took off and got a hundred replies, most of which are nice but don’t warrant an in-depth response, I could read and swipe to upvote each in a few seconds, leaving the ones warranting more time and a reply unread and going back for them afterwards.
If the intention is that people should comment or post more rather than (just) voting, making them vote less isn’t gonna achieve that. A comment is nowhere near a decent substitute for a vote. The difference in effort between “swipe” and “swipe, think of what you want to say, consider whether it’s too inane to be worth a comment, fret over the wording to avoid accidentally stepping on toes you care about, knowing that people may end up judging you for your choice of words anyway, or maybe even complain about you commenting too much in general” is monumental. The venomous treatment he’s been getting isn’t helping.
And even if he did comment, what if the other person replies in a civil manner? You’d like to reward and encourage that. If you’re out of votes for the day, the only thing you could do is reply “+” or some variant, which would probably result in people jumping down your throat for making such a pointless comment, similar to the “this” comments. “That’s what upvotes are for”, I’ve seen people argue. Which is entirely correct, but what if you’re out of upvotes? Do you just stop engaging for the day, knowing you’ll be frustrated anyway?
The bottom line is that a vote cap inhibits engagement. If we wanna prevent engagement bait and karma farming, we can simply not show anyone’s “score” on their profiles and moderate excessive outrage bait posts.
So this achieves nothing good, just punishes those that contributed most.
he left over internet points that don’t mean anything or have a practical effect on anything?
it sounds to me like it may have been more about being able to curate the community through active engagement more than an attachment to the end product of such a feature, i.e. total profile “score” of different users’ contributions.
honestly sounds like he got consumed by his unending hatred. I loved the guy but he had serious issues and would debate anybody who disagreed with him. Sad to see yet another active community member get consumed by hatred and frustration
I never got the impression of hatred from him.
would debate anybody who disagreed with him
I mean, debate is the way to test arguments and refine understanding. If your understanding diverges from someone else’s (like mine does from yours here), is it wrong to point out why you think they’re wrong and either help them understand some part better or be taught by them instead?
I think that’s just a different mode of communication and using social media. I know he’s chronically ill and believe he describes himself as “cripple”, suggesting that his body has forsaken him, which makes IRL social activities difficult and painful.
The beauty of the internet is that you can interact with people there, even if your body can’t handle going to the pub or whatever. So I don’t blame him for leaning more on his mind than his body and being chronically online if the offline world is chronically hell.
Sad to see yet another active community member get consumed by hatred and frustration
I think the frustration is mostly at the fact that rimu is pursuing a policy other admins have advised against and it’s killing his fun. He has stated several times that he doesn’t think rimu is totally off-kilter and that he gets the motive, just doesn’t agree that it would have any beneficial effect on the fediverse.
That doesn’t sound like hatred to me, more the disappointment of seeing a working partner you otherwise respect take steps that make it hard for you to keep working with them.
yeah hatred was the wrong word maybe. Rage?
I have a lot of rage, tbf, but it’s not why I wound down participation. I wasn’t tired of arguing or overwhelmed by shitheads on the Fediverse - I’d mostly kept to places that shitheads didn’t congregate at by the time I left Piefed.
It was basically just a policy disagreement with Rimu over admin/coding stuff that affected my experience as a user. That’s all.
When my user experience got more irritating on a technical level and promised to stay that way, I decided that I didn’t want to deal with it and couldn’t move all my communities again. It was just exhaustion.
On the Old Place I was never more than a lurker and occasional commenter. I only ran the comms I did because the Threadiverse lacked alternatives, and I didn’t want the only topics I cared to comment on to wither for lack of activity.
The limited interaction I had with him was him coming into a conversation between me and another commentator a level deep into one of his posts. He came in hot, dismissive, and condescending towards me. When I pointed it out, his response boiled down to, “Your bad take deserves it”. I tried to clarify my position and it became clear that anything I said wouldn’t soften his judgement. I ended up blocking him because it wasn’t worth my time. But it left me effected.
Bad faith debates aren’t about the argument and, in this case, ended up being about a personality
Well, speak of the devil.
I’m going to block this account as well. Finding my comment buried deep in a discussion yet again and feeling compelled to jump in with the same snarky condescension is exactly why I don’t want to interact with you. Your reliance on hostility, bad-faith caricatures, and aggressive profanity to “win” a performance is why I blocked you in the first place. By setting up a false binary where any attempt to discuss specific historical structures is automatically labeled a “noble savage” trope, you created a framework that leaves no room for actual historical specificity or nuance. There was never room for a genuine conversation.
To be clear for anyone genuinely curious about this historiographical distinction: resisting reductive materialism is not an assertion of moral innocence or ‘noble savagery.’ It is a recognition of historical contingency and structural logic. Human violence is real, but it is not a uniform mechanical reflex. Kinship-based warfare and state-sponsored, capitalist settler-colonialism operate under fundamentally different cultural schemas and institutional logics. Recognizing that culture actively shapes how human societies utilize power and resources rather than treating all humans as uniform cogs in a deterministic equation is standard social theory.
If you are not PugJesus and happen to see his point and the errors I made, I’m very open to hearing them. Please do take the time to understand my interpretive frame. I think I’ve carefully situated it such that it doesn’t preclude the possibility of this happening, but recognizes the role of culture in providing a mitigating factor. I just ask that you engage in direct discussion and assume a modicum of good faith on my part. It is something I take seriously.
Here are some thinkers and movements who have influenced my views: The Cultural Turn: Thinkers who argue that culture is not merely a passive byproduct of an economic base, but an active, creative force that shapes human behavior and historical outcomes on its own terms. If they made any major mistake, it was that there was no theory making.
Logics of History by William Sewell Jr: He critiques the radical particularism of the “cultural turn” while rejecting mechanical materialism. Sewell bridges the gap by arguing that historical events can be bracketed to reveal how Schemas (cultural logics/rules) and Resources (material power) dialectically interact to transform social structures over time. If there’s anything I would want anyone to walk away with, its the understanding and value of bracketing when doing history.
Antonio Gramsci: His cultural hegemony notes that cultural frameworks, ideas, and “common sense” actively shape material realities and must be engaged with as an independent site of struggle.
Bertell Ollman: Develops the idea that social relations are a web of internal relations where the individual, culture, and material conditions co-constitute each other simultaneously.
Ernst Bloch: He rejected linear material determinism, showing that humans live in overlapping cultural temporalities that prevent consciousness from simply “mirroring” the immediate economic base.
When it comes to doing history, I reject predetermined trajectories and defend culture as an active, open-ended variable. Humans are universally bound by material realities, their cultural systems dictate how they respond to those realities, making historical development fundamentally open-ended rather than mechanically predictable.
PieFed did some policy change on… weighting votes for people who vote thousands of times a day, or something like that? PJ said that made him want to change instance again, but he’d done that a few times already and couldn’t be bothered with the process again. (this is from memory, i haven’t double checked while writing)
It was a cap. 240, as far as I know. Given that it would make him ration his engagement and caused him anxiety, he was fed up, but didn’t wanna move a third time.
instance banned for zionism iirc and decided not to rejoin more
Ramanujan’s pi formula.
Similar formulas were used to calculate digits of pi very fast etc.
I see. It makes so much sense now.
Thank you
There are many different formulas for deriving digits of pi, and the history of mathematics has a bunch of people trying to brute force inefficient formulas for pi out to a few digits, as they develop more efficient methods.
Archimedes drew a circle and put some polygons around the inner and outer limits to determine that it was somewhere between 22/7 and 223/71, accurate to within 2 digits. That general polygon method was used by Ptolemy to calculate out to 3 digits, and used by Chinese mathematician Zu Chongzhi to estimate pi at 355/113, accurate to 7 digits.
The polygon method was very tedious, requiring many, many calculations in order to advance just a few digits.
The Liebniz formula was a breakthrough (discovered by Indian mathematician Madhava of Sangamagrama), because discovering that pi/4 was equal to the infinite series 1 - 1/3 + 1/5 - 1/7 . . . meant that someone could calculate some number of digits accurately, and then continue the calculation in a way that reports what is known so far, and can continue down the line towards a more precise result. Still, by itself, it was a very slowly converging algorithm, requiring 5 billion terms just to get to 10 digits of accuracy. Mathematicians got to using other tricks (that, if I’m being honest, I don’t understand) to make it faster.
Then Ramanujan discovered series that were rapidly converging (including the one in this meme) where although calculating each term might require a lot of calculations, it would spit out 8 digits for each term you fed it. It became the preferred method for calculating digits of pi, and when computers were developed, they were able to make use of that computational efficiency. It still remains the basis for how a computer will calculate a few million digits of pi.
How convenient, to come up with a formula that spits out 32 bits
Okay that’s really cool actually, thanks for the explanation
That’s like illegal
If its so bad why does it make me feel so good ??? 😭
Me dreaming

This and you really want a pineapple but she laughs at you and won’t give you one and you start to get really anxious
Or you take one and bite into it, but the pineapples are actually her children. So you now have this bloody pineapple and the pineapple woman screaming at you in despair, and you regret your awful actions.
That’s why a villain that manipulate people’s dreams wouldn’t work, he would go in therapy after the 3rd dream he see
Ugh, I hate that dream
Wait a minute, are you telling me you can dream about literal scantily clad women without a single summation, integral, or root?
Just do both: https://pbfcomics.com/comics/the-breakthrough/
Damn. Look at those vectors.
… what’s the point then?
It’s the cute little dot you put in between the numbers to separate the units from the decimal places
Fucking needs and their nearly naked women. Amiright?
I dreamed my root was integral in her summation.
And here’s the kicker, no one judges you!
I suspect they are in the pineapples, but she won’t give me one.
Absolute bitch.
Oh there’s a root in there don’t you worry
Oh my, you caught my attention
If only…
I have solved a programming design problem in my sleep few times. Nowhere near PhD level problems tho.
I’m still trying to figure out how it can be simultaneously nighttime and daytime in my dreams so mazel tov, you’re in the AP classes here
(I think my brain doesn’t render rayleigh scattering)
A radical solution

Um, actually… I think the square root operation takes precedence over the division.
It’s not an operation. OP is working with a field where {√, 2} is a subset of that field’s elements.
In that case… carry on then!
Psst that’s the joke, that the math does not work out in the second one :)
That’s the joke they’re making about the joke being made
Eh, bad math aside they’re left with √=√ which is true.
deleted by creator
And true = 1 hence √ = 1, I’m glad we figured this out!!
happens to the best of us
I don’t dream like ever. Probably linked to my aphantasia.
If you ever do have a dream, write down everything that happened as soon as you wake up. Your ability to “have dreams” and remember them is like a muscle that can be exercised. To exercise it, you have to write them down so they cannot be forgotten.
Same, every time code or math appears in my dreams it’s a nonsensical mess
Bad title
Did you mean: Ramanujan?
The requested page title contains unsupported characters: “%E2”.Oddly, when I search for it myself, I get the same URL:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ramanujan–Sato_series
Either Lemmy is messing it up, or the Thunder app is. If I copy and paste the URL, ir works. So maybe Thunder is doing something to the URL when I tap it?
Thunder is encoding the percent-signs, that are used for the original encoding of the dash. Which of course bungles the url.
Presumably it allows Thunder to open URLs with raw Unicode characters in them. But ironically, I’ve just tried to insert the same address here with the dash preserved, and Thunder converted it to percent-encoding when posting (or Lemmy did, but I doubt that).
Works on Voyager
