How can I transition?
Like most people I need a mobile device, but I need to be able to put My carefully accumulated MP3s on it. I don’t care about performance. I just want a phone that can hold my fucking music. And Apple is fucking me in the dick. I’m open to suggestions. I was a tech-support agent for five years, but I’m still dumb as a rock because I was working for Apple. I might understand a little bit of what you’re talking about. Please help me

I mean not to stop you from getting away from Apple but you can already put your mp3, flac, opus etc… on your iPhone device with VLC or other player apps.
You can absolutely do that with an iPhone.
There are a few ways, the most important thing is to make sure you have the space on your phone.
I have about 800-900 songs on my iPhone 16e, all bought through iTunes, then I also used to carry 100-200 songs from remix.kwed.org at the same time.
Based on your post, I’ll assume that you have a collection of non-iTunes songs that you want to transfer to your iPhone.
To do that you have two alternatives:
- Connect your phone to your computer, and use the iTunes software, first import your music collection into iTunes, then sync it to your phone.
- Get the VLC app on your iPhone, it has a webserver which can be accessed through the local network, and you can upload individual tracks directly to the VLC app on your phone, it is however slow and annoying.
Both of these apps support carplay.
I hope that even if you ultimately decide against using your iPhone in this way, it at least buys you some time to save, do research and get the actual MP3 playing solution you want.
You don’t need Linux for this. You want Android.
Buy a phone with a microSD slot, put a 512 GB/1 TB card in it, connect it to your computer over USB, choose File Transfer, and drag your MP3 folders directly onto it. Android treats them as normal files.
Install Musicolet afterward. It’s specifically made for local music, works offline, supports SD cards and folder browsing, and handles MP3/FLAC/AAC/etc.
A 2026 Moto G or Moto G Power supports up to a 1 TB microSD card. You can have literally hundreds of gigabytes of your own music on the phone without involving a cloud service at all.

Keep the iPhone, buy a MP3 player. There are loads, with SD card slots, and Android-based.
