Ridiculous anti-AI hysteria is pushed by the AI companies themselves to make the anti-AI side look insane. Don’t fall for it.
plus there is absolutely no way of knowing how many of the pro-AI voices are even real people
Ridiculous anti-AI hysteria is pushed by the AI companies themselves to make the anti-AI side look insane.
And to weaken the FOSS communities I guess. Plain information warfare.
the hysteria is taking on a new life of its own and i guess it makes sense considering how people’s materials conditions are being diminished on our education system as well as our media doesn’t enable us to understand why or how.
I mean, I’m not sure the hysteria is completely unreasonable. AI does pose multiple legitimate threats and should be used responsibly, and not trusted with certain duties. We’ve also seen that the powers that be treat the world around them like a fratboy treats a drunken co-ed (it’s meant to be disgusting), and that the constant growth demanded by the shareholders leaves no room for ethics, morals, or big-picture thinking.
I use AI. I also built my own for simple tasks. I’ve had a lot of experiences with AI at this point, and its generous to say the pros-cons are a wash. The use-cases I and most normies see is AI expediting an already blazing fast enshitification of everything around us.
I feel like a lot of the online discord about it are Chinese/Russian bots generating “look at how unreliable AI is” pictures to manipulate the western powers to shoot itself in the foot. And they use those of us on the left to do it because are greatest Strength is our emotions but it’s also the easiest way to manipulate us.
Outrage works really well on my fellow leftists. And AI makes them so freaking emotional now, it blinds them I feel. Just like we have learned that a tooon of the online outrage from the BLM movement was bot(not literal bot) generated. And it made us look insane and that’s how we partially got trump
Ho boy, found the MAGA
Lmao far from it. I never said blm’s concerns weren’t legitimate, just that the movement got hijacked online to encourage you to burn (mostly black) neighborhoods.
Might not be user-facing AI slop tools, but the code sure seems to be more and more AI LLM stuff:
https://discuss.kde.org/t/sorry-to-bring-up-a-contentious-topic-kde-ai-llm-policy/46333 (At least that’s what the pushback from multiple contributors against the notion that perhaps LLM code shouldn’t be fed into KDE, seems to suggest.)
a worthwhile read in regards to what pushing AI does to a contributor and a community: https://blog.fallible.net/it-breaks-a-village/
Thankfully the culture of Linux power users (I am not one) is firmly anti-AI. There are several reasons for this, and not all are altruistic, but it’s the right approach to have. Dummies like me have to use it for commands, codes, and scripts, but I’m not going to be submitting ANYTHING to any kind of actual project, because I recognize my incompetence.
I’m getting a lot of questions about KDE becoming an AI desktop that I feel like is answered by my “KDE is not becoming an AI desktop” video.
Wait, is KDE becoming an AI desktop? Your video is unclear.
I think it is, why else would the video be so insistent it isn’t?
I guess kde publicly addressing AI usage goes to show how much this fear has become mass hysteria
Why is a .ml user advocating for something used to take bargaining power away from workers?
your comment seems to imply that i’m a marxist because i’m on lemmy.ml – i’m not (as most arent), but i do understand material dialectics & history well enough to know that hysteria like this never has and never will stop change from happening.
I prefer this response to Gerard’s rant:

MaddieM added even more that I thought was salient in another response:

defeats the point of a CoC (making sure everyone feels safe, particularly minorities who are targeted by fascism)
I’d argue that if we normalize people barging into random threads and accusing others of facism, that would make everybody feel unsafe. Remember that once you normalize this behavior, the fascists can use it too.
… ends up creating a scandal …Very visibly, I might add.
The person who barged in making public accusations, is the one that created a visible scandal. That’s why there’s a proper channel for reports. Precisely to prevent this sort of mess.
we should normalize accusing fascists of fascism
You can report people all you like. Just use proper channels to do so.
We should normalize due process.
Normalizing people making up their own rules and exacting their own justice is how you end up with https://lemmy.world/post/52260289
Yeah. The point is that it can be a slippery slope. Everybody (myself included, I have to be honest bcs well, I’m a very stupid human after all) will be calling anything we don’t like something fascist, thus making it a worthless term. That’s what actual fascism want.
Thus, we should be way more careful with the use of that word.
MaddieM advocated for removing the post, that’s not even close to “normalizing” it imo
Just removing the post without any punishment to the user, just means the user can do it again.
A ban is fairly harsh I admit, but usually bans only happen for repeat offenders. I don’t know the full context here.
Remember that once you normalize this behavior, the fascists can use it too.
The fascists don’t care. They’ll work to normalize whatever they want regardless
Why not ban person A? Being a nazi is a rule violation, but reporting people by barging in on unrelated threads (instead of simply contacting the mods) is also a rule violation.
Somebody else can report the nazi via proper channels, and person A learns the proper way to report people.
person A learning anything is useless if they are banned
Teaches them for any future accounts they make on other forums
Bringing an on-going discussion from outside into a thread with which it bore no relationship, The correct way to proceed is to alert mods, sysadmins or another participant in the discussion privately. What happened is akin to someone walking into a restaurant and seemingly randomly punching another patron. They’re going to get thrown out.
Damn what a completely out of touch response. Many people point out that this was basically a badly handled abuse report that a user brought to a main thread instead of reporting, however that does not and never did justify the original and continued ban of the first person to report on it.
I am especially galled by the “and ad hominem attacks on another user (even if it turned out they deserved it).” bit. Dude, maybe someone’s motivations matter. Acting like attacking someone’s motivations are always out of place is part of what lets this kind of shit fester and grow. Everyone has motivations, and a lot of people’s motivations are deeply unsavory.
Bruh my Kubuntu minimal install. Welp. *sigh que sera sera, we all move on sometime.
Budgie
Bye bye KDE.
Actually happy with Umbriel + Noctalia. Last straw to KDE is I prefer QT over GTK.
Noctalia is vibe-coded.
Got some evidence for that?
Noctalia looks interesting. Never heard of it before. Unfortunately though there’s no packages for Void Linux.
Just use i3 and not KDE lol
i3 is way too barebones. Also it’s not as extensible as KDE. Also it’s strictly tiling, while most ppl prefers stacking and/or floating WMs.
Also, it’s tainted:

- https://github.com/i3/i3/commit/9be3249ac5b377ed3270e36bca83df53d8023337
tainted
I recently used that word as hyperbole to make fun of a user who insisted that AI-less comments from someone who used AI once should count as AI.
I didn’t know the cult actually uses that word. How far will the insanity go?
I don’t want my WM of choice to be X11-based.
or CDE instead of KDE.
The true Cool Desktop Environment.
Yeah but i3 sucks massively
Yeah, also tainted by AI too.
Or Sway, if you’re on Wayland.
River >>> Everything else.
They’re even featured as openly anti-AI in Open Slopware’s list!!!
I’ll check it out, thanks.
Hope it’s helpful to you! 😊
Hyperland if your fancy
incredibly rich to suggest Hyprland as a response to ethical quandaries with KDE

Well buddy I’m out of the loop and whatever is going on but it seems you know so why don’t you tell me what hyperland did wrong and educate me :)
I see you’re point
Isn’t it a good point?
