I’ll have more faith once it can reliably switch back and forth between Unicode symbols and their underlying HTML entities. It understands the concept of emojis and can use them appropriately, but I can tell there’s still some underlying issues in the token/object model for non-ASCII symbols.

From someone who has tried pixelfed, it is basically a photo post filter for mastodon. You can see photo posts people make on mastodon from pixelfed and you can see pixelfed posts from Mastodon. So as mastodon apps improve and you can filter posts by content type (maybe you already can?) than pixelfed is basically irrelevant and/or equivalent to a photography focused mastodon instance.

I found out quickly that the instance matters. California at exploding-heads is not the same thing as my California, and they won’t be talking about fun hikes to do on the weekend over there.
I need to look more into pictrs and what it can do. Is this done on purpose for image redundancy? I get the reason if the original instance goes offline then I’d still have a copy but maybe I don’t really want a copy? Also would be nice if I could get it to convert everything to webp

I was thinking the same thing, universities have historically been the main nodes on the internet because they had the largest data centers. Now that’s all being replaced by MGA and schools redistribute more and more of the budget into athletics. If universities are still hosting mirrors but they’re all virtual cloud servers in the same colo, I’m not sure how effective that is.

I’ll admit I checked it out just to see. Then I realized I actually don’t know anybody who still uses Instagram and I didn’t know what to talk about anyway, so I deleted it and blocked them from my instance.
