    Originated in the aristocracy? I always thought of it as basic cold-weather comfort food: chunks of beef in gravy, maybe some onions or potatoes mixed in, served hot over noodles. It was a normal meal in my suburban family, and also with my rural relatives out in farm county.

    That said, I don’t get the joke. Same with the bean thing that was going around a month or two back.

      There is no joke other than the original post, which I’ve linked here in another comment.

      It’s just silly and it caught on as a trend, just like the beans or the no poop challenge.

      The dish was originally served in tsarist Russia. Not just any beef chunks, but quickly sautéed beef tender with a sauce of demi-glace and crème fraiche. Even the egg noodles were just eggs and white (!) flour.

      The French chefs of the time were working in Russia after the revolution in France. The fact that your family wasn’t living in serfdom is why they were able to enjoy those dishes.

      Wait until you find out what Marie Antoinette really said. What a c—t!

    I guess we are witnessing a form of metamorphosis of Lemmy. The Stroganov is us proving we can really get wildly absurd over something utterly benign.

    There was this picture with a questionnaire, it was something like “How often do you want Beef Stroganoff updates?” and one of the options was “Only if something big happens”. No need to be salty just because you weren’t there. Not everything that you don’t understand needs to fuck off.

      Yeah I saw that post, but didn’t know if it was what started the stroganoff movement or just a continuation of it. I don’t even eat beef, so stroganoff is not my thing. Beans ftw

        This is true of lots of foods. What tends to be the case is that, when times are bad and the unemployed need to subsist directly on their own labour, it makes sense for them to do things like go oystering because time is something they have, but when times are better, catching oysters is time consuming so the food is expensive.

      Salmon too. Used to be so plentiful and thus cheap here that everyone except the truly destitude would take it as a grave insult to be served gravlax 😄

    I am an expert in poop and beans and fully participated in those periods of lemmy history, but stroganoff is totally foreign to me

      this is like textbook definition xenophobia lol I’m not calling you racist, but just because you don’t understand something does not make it bad or wrong. Also stroganoff is delicious, you should def try it

    I haven’t seen the memes only mentions of it but if you’re talking about Stroganoff, I assumed it was a joke that it’s rich people food.

    Where I live it’s mostly associated with cheap buffet style restaurants, although they make it from pork, not beef.
