I am thinking about getting a Boneless Couch.

Has anyone tried them? Do they maintain their shape?

I have one and it’s my favorite thing ever. Just make sure you get one with a tall enough back. Pillows will not be enough. Alot of these boneless couches dont have good backs or short backs

A family member made one with an exoskeleton to hold it all together (separate foam blocks, four for the base with a firm block under a soft one for structure, raised sides and full block for the back with a tube cage to hold them all together) that lasted more than 40 years with only one reupholster.

The foam blocks were quite cheap direct from the supplier (I think they made mattresses, the back plate was an offcut but the rest were practically custom)

If you can get yourself some decent foam blocks then it could be more cost effective and long lasting to make your own using fabric to hold the shape together the way store bought ones do.

Foam is pretty notorious for wearing out over time.

That said I have no experience with these couches. But with my experience with normal foam I can’t imagine it’s good.

Can confirm latex foam is good stuff, I have a latex foam mattresses that has lasted decades. Not all foam is the same tho, so maybe look into what kind of foam is in whichever couch you consider. Some seem to use memory foam. If you look at one of those, make sure you know what your getting into and whether you like that. I have no experience or opinion on memory foam myself but one person I know regrets their memory foam mattress. I think it has to do with heat and feeling held in place when the foam warms up and they sink in.

You’ll need to make sure that the upholstery has some degree of rigidity for structure to keep its shape. The foam itself will not be enough.

E.g. foam with only a thin cotton-like covering? Garbage, will be barely better than a beanbag.

Separated cushions will help rigidity too as they will deform and reduce the load on the main form.

Get the most dense/stiff foam possible to maintain form: you can always soften it with more cushions, you can’t do opposite.

Mine has. Pretty good little couch actually, though not as soft as others. You could probably put additional cushions on top.

I’m glad your couch has maintained its shape. It figures that the foam isn’t very soft. If it were too soft, it would break down more easily.
